Modelling is really fun, once you get used to the tools you are using a bit more. Today was no exception. I spent time around some other tree models, using old techniques I used in college. I found that trying to be more complicated for the sake of showing skill was actually further from the kind of style, at least I, envision for the game. If it works, it doesn’t matter how simple it is. Sometimes you have to think about your aesthetics rather than about showing off. So after taking sometime to realize that and after much frustration I managed to move on to other assets. This includes water lily’s and flowers to go floating in the water areas.

Afterwards it was important to see what all the other indie developers where up to and how they where getting on with their progress. I think its important thing to do, because people are going through various stages of making their own game, and whilst you might not think they have the best game idea in the world, its good to see the justifications, the lessons and achievements of those around you. It’s not about comparing your vision to theirs, because you could have a totally different outlook on what’s appealing and what they feel will be appealing to their players. Some really impressive stuff out there and its very admirable that they put their art on show, and that’s not to sound too big-headed with what we are doing ,but it’s hard to release you creation to the world, especially at the early stages. To all the indie developers or aspiring indie developers we wish you the best of luck.

Looking forward to working to working on the game over the next week. Keep in touch.

Assets Assets Assets

I haven’t been feeling any better today and I was busy in the morning, but I did manage to do some assets done today which includes a new mountain, a burnt out tree and additional rocks. I’m looking forward to Malcolm coming back and for him to have a meeting with Sean and I. I’ll be able to go over some assets and what our steps are moving forward.

I’m not sure about this Mountain. It looks different from the non-rendered version and I feel a colour or texture change is due.

Thanks for reading!

Pebbles & Fences

Today hasn’t been a productive for myself as I haven’t been feeling to great. However I did manage to get some work done. I created a pebble sandy landscape which could lead up to the desert area or be a part of the hot spring section. However I have an issue with the render looking like its blurred out.

I also worked on creating a basic fence as a means to show the player the constraints of the creatures movement. There will be different types of fencing in the game.

Image

This is the fence, it can be easily expanded, more variations to come.

Tomorrows focus is working with the game to figure out how to input effects. More variations of different objects will be made over the next few days.

I hope you enjoyed today’s update and stay tuned!

I am a Mountain

Today I decided to carry on with some additional assets for the game. I created a mountain that still needs a little work in terms of colour, but I’ll stick it up to show everyone.

Image

A snowy mountain model, it will need some colour and or texturing.

I also worked on creating a Hot spring area but I’m having loads of issues with water, which has been frustrating. The good news is I had a meeting with Sean to cover some stuff and I will be switching to making the effects, like water in the actual game, which may prove easier or more frustrating. Knowing my luck… To be fair its a great way to learn and Its a good sense of achievement and pride when things eventually work out.

Sean will be working on making the creature move around a set area, it will be very basic at first but we can expand on it at a later date, this will be good for demonstration purposes.

The next step is having a meeting with Malcolm when he returns and is rested from his travels. For now I will just keep making assets and Sean will be working on the programming side of things.

Hope you enjoyed your update on our game!

Volcano Holiday

Today Sean is still away at Leeds, he should be back for a meeting tomorrow and Malcolm is away to England for a few days. So today’s post is mostly about my progress. Today I started working on my Volcano. I have two versions. One with effects and one without. The reason for this is it might not be possible to export the effects over to our game and the effects may have to be made in the engine instead.  Either way its good practice.

Image

Here is a picture of the model. Some work needs done to make it stand out better and find out how to get rid of those lines.

This next picture is focused on the smoke effects. However I am having some issues with it looking like its appearing from outside the Volcano, even though it’s actually coming from the Volcano. I’ve tried to make the volcano have flying debris and so far it’s working when I render the animation. I still have a lot of work to do with it and I’ll need to consult Malcolm when he’s back to make sure its perfect. At the meeting with Sean I will need to make sure the effects can carry over to the game.

Image

This is a non rendered picture but you can still see the animation of smoke.

I hope to have a video up soon once I talk over some issue with Malcolm, so stay tuned for more information.

Thanks for reading!

Forming a Picture

Today Malcolm’s worked at creating a prototype version of our User Interface which is actually presentable to the player. It’s not fully finished but it paints the picture of how the game could potentially turn out.

Image

More UI is still to be added, but this is the picture starting to take form.

I spent most of my time creating some more assets to use in our game. Such as more trees, decorations and rocks. Theirs still a lot to do, especially because each area will vary and we want to make sure the elements are a huge part of shaping the landscape.

I phoned Sean up today and he has implemented Malcolm’s fixed model and IT WORKS! It was causing us all quite a bit of stress, especially Malcolm who spent time crafting it. It turns out he needed to recreate its head. Now we still do have to implement the next batch of creatures Malcolm has modeled which Malcolm still needs to rig up after the User Interface is complete.

We still need to get round to testing and discussing our options for potential funding.

Watch this space, we need your support!

Small Update

Today I worked on some objects for the tree such as apples. Nothing major. Had a horrible time trying to add lines to my tree to make it look more detailed. After some frustration and Malcolm laughing at me I decided to work on our dead tree models, it’s going smoother and then I’ll go back to texturing.

Malcolm’s worked with his buttons and has made a small menu, the order of the buttons still need changed around but it’s looking great.

Thanks for tuning in,
